Maryland Program Honored Nationally
for Financial Literacy Efforts
WASHINGTON, DC –– The Training Source of Seat Pleasant, MD, has been named the winner
of 2007 Award of Excellence by Women Work! The National Network for Women’s
Employment, for its innovative and successful financial literacy programming. Selected from a
competitive pool of organizations throughout the country, The Training Source will be presented
with the award on April 25, 2007, at the Women Work! National Conference, in Arlington, VA.
“In the last year students at the Training Source increased their earnings, and they have also
changed their spending habits, cleaned up bad credit, purchased homes and sent children to
college,” said Kim Rhim, Executive Director of the Training Source. “Our programs expand
opportunities for women to succeed at work and develop women’s financial literacy so when
they start earning money they can put it to good use.”
Financial literacy is woven into each of the programs The Training Source offers to unemployed
and underemployed women, displaced homemakers, welfare recipients and dislocated workers.
Last year more than 250 families received financial literary services. Students learn
fundamentals of budgeting, financial planning, banking, saving and investing concept using an
innovative cross-functional training model that employs audio, visual and kinesthetic learning
modalities. Many classes rely on Women Work!'s Making Money Work! curriculum as their
primary resource.
“The Training Source is a shining example of how programs across Women Work!’s National
Network of job training and education programs take a holistic approach to helping women gain
economic security for themselves and their families,” said Jill Miller, President & CEO of
Women Work!.
The Women Work! Award of Excellence is presented annually to Women Work! members for
exceptional, innovative program practices serving women's education and employment needs.
