Development Doctor
When searching for funding opportunities, my first reaction is to use keywords like “employment” or “women.” Yet, this type of search may omit certain funding that is not tied to the issues we work on–these are opportunities that support things like “leadership development” and “capacity building.”
Very often funding for these activities can be used to send staff to professional development workshops and conferences, like Women Work!'s National Conference in April, or can be used to buy equipment, technology and other items tied to organizational growth.
Tip: Check with your current funders to see if they offer extra grant money for these kinds of activities and conduct additional searches to find opportunities through other funders.
Questions or Suggestions?
Send your questions or leads to the Development Doctor. Remember good prescriptions for financial health should be shared, so let the Doctor know about resources you find useful!
Resources
A series of sixteen videos featuring women in non-traditional careers, this collection is ideal for vocational counseling, career exploration days, library programs, scout and youth groups, One-Stop centers, Women's History Month and Women's Equality Day. Using first person narratives based upon extensive interviews, the videos present oral histories of a wide range of vocations in a concise way. They can stand alone or be used with their 114-page resource guides as an effective program.
The U.S. Women's Chamber of Commerce was established to revolutionize the economic opportunities and impact of women. As the driving force of Women's Ownership Movement, the USWCC establishes strategies and tools, a bold new women's economic platform and a community for progress. These forces come together to drive the Women's Ownership Movement.
The Women Network's charge is to unite and empower women of color in order to work towards eliminating the societal barriers that disenfranchise women of color and future generations. This organization aspires to unify women with similar interests to enable them to become active citizens in society and their respective communities. The Women Network provides programs in Political Education and Awareness, Financial Education, Health & Wellness, Community Development and Education Development.
Lifetime Television's Women's Pulse Poll shatters prevailing myths about the life goals of Gen Y women (aged 18-29) by painting a complex picture of a highly ambitious generation seeking to achieve career success at a rapid pace, but expecting greater control and wanting more flexibility. To find out more about this poll, and the rest of the “Spotlight 25,” visit Lifetime's web site.
Funding Opportunities
Fundraising in Rural Communities
In this webinar, Kim Klein, Grassroots Fundraising Journal, will look at the challenges and opportunities present in small towns and rural communities. She will talk about the many different kinds of rural communities and how they can raise money from people both inside and outside their geographic area. This webinar will have a number of interesting case studies. For more information and to register please visit: www.grassrootsfundraising.org or call 1-888-458-8588.
Ms. Foundation Safety Grants
The Ms. Foundation for Women announces a call for proposals in the area of gender violence prevention. They are seeking proposals from grassroots groups with an organizing approach to gender violence prevention. Areas of particular interest include community-driven strategies that challenge gender violence on a systemic level, child sexual abuse/incest prevention and prevention strategies that transform gender roles. Organizations seeking grant awards must utilize community-centered strategies driven by a race, class, gender analysis. Copies of guidelines may be downloadable. Proposals must be received by May 24, 2007.
Encore Career Grants
The MetLife Foundation/Civic Ventures Community College Encore Career Grants open doors for boomers who want their next chapter, or encore, to include a "purpose-driven job." Grants will be awarded to innovative community colleges that are creating new ways for adults 50+ to transition to "encore careers" in education, healthcare and social services--all sectors facing critical labor shortages. Community colleges will receive grants of up to $25,000 each to help attract, prepare or place adults 50+ in new careers in education, healthcare and social services. Although grants may complement existing community college resources and build on community connections, funds cannot be used for traditional older adult offerings that focus on cultural, recreational or personal enrichment activities. Deadline: May 1, 2007.
What's New at Women Work!?
Women's Bureau Funding Cut
Against the intentions of Congress, The Department of Labor has cut money from the Women's Bureau's already meager budget for FY 2007. This cut will force the agency to reduce or eliminate vital programs that support working women, including the technical assistance Women Work! provides to our national network.
With your help, we can convince Secretary Chao that working women matter! Take a moment to send a letter or sign a petition telling Secretary Chao to restore the funding. You can also read more about the Women's Bureau and the important work that it does for working women.
Extra Tax Time!
Since the normal deadline for filing federal income taxes, April 15, falls on a Sunday this year, you have some extra time to complete your taxes. April 16 also happens to be Emancipation Day, a holiday in the District of Columbia, so taxes for anyone in the country do not have to be postmarked until April 17, 2007. The IRS was not aware of this holiday until after they printed and distributed their forms, so even if your forms indicate that they must be postmarked by April 16, you have an extra day. For more information about the tax credits you can claim until April 17, visit the tax section of the Women Work! web site.
Women Work! Pay Them Fairly
Join Women Work!, Members of Congress and national women's advocacy groups on Capitol Hill this Equal Pay Day, April 24, to demand women's wage equity, Now! Women are still paid only 77 cents for every dollar men are paid. April 24 marks how far into 2007 that it takes women to be paid what men was paid in 2006. Equal pay is fair for women, good for families and right for America. Find out more about the Women Work! Pay Them Fairly rally, and the speakers who will lead it, at the Women Work! web site.
