Wednesday night, several members of the U.S. Senate frustrated justice for working women across the country when they voted against a motion that would bring the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, H.R. 2831/S. 1843, to a floor vote. The Ledbetter Act, which has already been passed by the House, would restore women's right to fight for fair pay by overturning unrealistic time limits on pay discrimination claims.

The Senators who voted against cloture (a motion that would have closed out debate on H.R. 2831 and brought it to a final vote) have effectively denied the bill a fair hearing on the Senate floor and working women a fair chance to fight against pay discrimination. But we are not giving up! Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has promised to reintroduce the motion soon. This time, we must be sure we have the 60 yea votes needed for cloture.

FOLLOW UP WITH YOUR SENATORS!

Let them know that not standing up for fair pay is unacceptable!

What To Do:

Check how your Senators voted here.

If the Senator voted YES on cloture, call his/her office and leave this message:

  • I am a constituent. My name is ________.
  • I would like to thank the Senator for voting in support of moving forward on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
  • I hope that the Senator will support the bill without amendments.

If the Senator voted NO, call his/her office and leave this message:

  • I am a constituent. My name is ________.
  • I am disappointed that the Senator voted against moving the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act forward.
  • I urge the Senator to reconsider his/her vote.

Fair pay should be one of Congress' highest priorities. We will keep pushing this issue. But we need your help!
