Women Work! Career Center Helps Women
Overcome Workforce Inequalities
WASHINGTON, DC –– This Labor Day women workers across the country are saving their
pennies, because, despite the gains we are celebrating, women still earn only 77 cents for each dollar men earn. That is why Women Work! The National Network for Women’s Employment has just launched the Women Work! Career Center, a new, comprehensive web site which helps women overcome the unique challenges they face in the workforce.
“For women, the workforce is often a maze of inequalities and discrimination,” said Jill Miller,
Women Work! President and CEO. “The Women Work! Career Center is the tool women can use to escape from that maze, to navigate a path to rewarding, lucrative careers, which will enable them to support themselves and their families.”
“The Women Work! Career Center is designed to counteract the factors which cause the wage gap between women and men and other inequalities women face in the workforce,” said Erin Currier, Women Work! V.P. for Programs and Policy. “Women are more likely than men to be segregated into dead-end service industry jobs that are poorly compensated; women are also more likely to have less paid work experience due to time away from work attending to family care responsibilities.”
The Women Work! Career Center addresses these challenges by providing women in all stages of their work life with the information they need to triumph in the workforce. The site is simple to use so that even women with limited computer skills can benefit from it. It contains advice about
balancing work and life, information on employee rights, step-by-step guides to résumé and cover letter writing and the Women Work! Job Finder, a job bank powered by CareerBuilder.
“Our Job Finder helps women expand their job search by connecting them with employers in a wide range of employment sectors, including well-paid skilled trades that traditionally employ mostly men,” said Miller. “There are currently more than 1.3 million jobs available on the Job Finder, many of which pay family supporting wages.”
The Women Work! Career Center and the Women Work! Job Finder are free for job seekers and
available to the public. Access them by clicking on the Career Center logo at www.womenwork.org.
Women Work! The National Network for Women’s Employment is a nonprofit, nonpartisan
organization that advances economic justice and equality for women through education, advocacy and organizing. Since 1978, the Network has assisted more than 10 million women to successfully enter, re-enter and advance in the workforce. Through supporting, advocating and increasing women’s economic self-sufficiency, Women Work! members strengthen families and communities.
