Online Job Banks Helps Women Bridge the Wage Gap
WASHINGTON, DC –– More than four decades after the passage of the 1963 Equal Pay Act,
full-time female workers in the United States are still paid only 77 cents for every dollar a fulltime male worker makes. On National Equal Pay Day, April 25th 2006, a new, free resource is
available to help women fight the wage gap by applying for jobs in lucrative fields. The Women
Work! Job Finder is an easy-to-use, online job bank that allows job seekers to connect to wellpaying, stable jobs all across the country.
Over a lifetime the wage gap between women and men adds up to astonishing financial losses for women. A high school graduate loses $700,000. A college graduate loses $1.2 million. A
professional school graduate loses $2 million. According to the National Committee for Pay
Equity, this wage gap is partly caused by the fact that women are often segregated into lowpaying occupations such as clerical, retail, and service jobs.
"Our Job Finder helps women expand their job search by connecting them with employers in the
well-paid skilled trades that traditionally employ mostly men,” explained Women Work!
President and CEO Jill Miller. “There are currently more than 500 jobs posted on the site, many
of which are nontraditional fields for women.”
The Job Finder allows job seekers to search for jobs, post their résumés for employers to search, and even receive automatic email alerts when jobs matching their criteria are posted to the site.
The site is free for job seekers, but it is also an excellent resource for employers who value a
diverse staff and want to tap into a pool of motivated, talented job seekers.
Job seekers and employers can access the Job Finder by visiting www.womenwork.org and
clicking on the Job Finder logo.
Women Work! The National Network for Women’s Employment is a nonprofit, nonpartisan
organization that advances economic justice and equality for women through education,
advocacy and organizing. Since 1978, the Network has assisted more than 10 million women to
successfully enter, re-enter and advance in the workforce. Through supporting, advocating and
advancing women’s economic self-sufficiency, Women Work! members strengthen families and
communities. For more information, visit www.womenwork.org or call (202) 467-6346.
